Visitors are required to obtain a temporary British Virgin Islands drivers license, which is valid for 3 months. A copy of their drivers license from their country of residence is necessary and it may be obtained from their car rental agency or the Department of Motor Vehicles. The minimum driving age in the BVI is 18 years however most rental companies restrict rentals to drivers younger than 25 years.

Driving in the BVI takes place on the left of the road and special care must be taken on the mountainous terrain found on most islands, especially during and after rain showers where debris, fog and slippery conditions present challenges on certain roadways. Seatbelts are mandatory for all front seat passengers and special seats for infants. Please note also that cellphone use is prohibited while driving.

In the event of an accident it is advisory that you leave your vehicle in its position until the traffic police have completed their investigation and approved the moving of the vehicle. Your car rental company may also have additional protocols that you are required to follow so it is crucial that you inquire from your agent on their particular requirements.
